When energy, labour and logistics become cheap, where on Earth becomes habitable that we currently regard as uninhabitable?
The thought experiment
Today, human life in Antarctica depends on a fragile chain of heat, electricity, food, shelter, transport, construction, maintenance and medical support. A settlement is hard because every one of those systems is expensive and vulnerable.
Abundant energy and autonomous robotics change the character of the problem. They do not make the continent warm, but they could make warmth, water, food and maintenance primarily engineering questions.
Working proposition: local autonomy could turn remote geography from a barrier into a choice.
What becomes possible
Robots could prepare insulated, partly underground settlements before people arrive.
Greenhouses, fermentation and cultured food could reduce dependence on resupply.
Isolation from geography need not mean isolation from communication, culture or care.
The human question
Imagine a warm house at −40°C, enormous windows onto an Antarctic landscape, abundant electricity, food and water, and robotic help with the work that currently makes the place dangerous. The attraction might not be conquest. It could be quiet, beauty, remoteness and a different rhythm of life.
That question exposes how much of our answer is shaped by inconvenience. Remove the logistical penalty and Antarctica becomes a test of preference: do people want to live where civilisation is dense, or where the landscape is extraordinary and the population sparse?
The boundary
Technical feasibility is not permission. Antarctica's international treaty system, scientific importance and environmental value are part of the argument, not footnotes after the engineering is solved.
The useful episode is therefore not a plan to settle Antarctica. It is a way to ask how abundance changes the map of possibility while keeping ethics, law and stewardship in view.
