What if Australia
had veins?

Could abundant energy and automated construction make a distributed water web possible across a continent that has always treated water as a boundary?

The infrastructure idea

Not one heroic pipeline—a living network.

Instead of a single mega-project, imagine many smaller channels, pipes, catchments, storage systems, transfers and local treatment plants. A distributed network can move water gradually and create redundancy when one link fails.

The question is not whether this is affordable or feasible today. It is what becomes thinkable when energy, construction and maintenance are no longer the dominant cost constraints.

Working proposition: abundance changes national infrastructure from a few impossible projects into a field of many design choices.

Three possible systems

Water web

Small transfers, storage and catchments gradually move surplus water through the continent.

Inland making

Desalination, evaporation and condensation turn energy into fresh water where it is needed.

Long walkabout

A supported path makes the bush safely reachable without urbanising the experience.

The deeper question

What old wishes become practical?

People already want water security, healthier landscapes, inland settlements, access to nature and meaningful journeys. The desire does not need to be invented by AGI; the constraint may simply be lifted.

The Long Walkabout Path belongs in this episode because it is cultural infrastructure as much as physical infrastructure: water, power, communications and safety support the journey while the landscape remains the point.

The boundary

Thinkable is not the same as advisable.

Large water and landscape projects have ecological, cultural, legal and political consequences. This page is a speculative design frame, not a proposal to divert rivers or alter Country.

Any real project would require First Nations authority, environmental assessment, engineering, water accounting, governance and public consent.
