What happens when one entrepreneur has a team of software agents handling the work that once required an entire office?
The agentic business
Agents can increasingly handle customer questions, bookings, recommendations, sales conversations, advertising, supplier negotiation, inventory, scheduling, bookkeeping and marketing.
The interesting question is not only whether customer-service work disappears. It is whether a person can operate a business with the reach, responsiveness and administrative capacity of a much larger company.
Working proposition: the smallest companies may gain organisational capabilities that used to require scale.
The new stack
Agents answer, sell, support and communicate with customers across channels.
Agents coordinate suppliers, inventory, schedules, payments and exceptions.
The human remains responsible for goals, boundaries, strategy and accountability.
The tension
Optimists see lower costs and a world where more people can start and run useful businesses. A single person may serve a market that previously needed a staff.
Critics see dependency on a few AI platforms that control the agents, data, payments and distribution. The business may be small in headcount while the infrastructure beneath it becomes more concentrated.
The human boundary
During the transition, humans still need to oversee exceptions, promises, safety, strategy and relationships. A software agent can perform a task without being the person who bears the consequence.
The episode should ask what kind of work remains when the organisation becomes mostly software, and whether the founder becomes freer—or simply responsible for a larger invisible system.
Ends Up Here question: when your employees are software, who is still accountable for the company?
