Ian
Wenzel.
A family archive of photos, plants and recorded fragments.
Explore01 / The visit
A day with
my cousin.
Ian is my second cousin. I visited him at his home in Warragul, Victoria, on 20 December 2020 and recorded fragments of the day. This page gathers the still photographs, material visible in those recordings, and the family history Ian had shared with us.
The album contains unedited fragments rather than a finished film. Captions distinguish what is visible from what is known; where I do not yet know a person’s name or a photograph’s date, I leave that open.
02 / Ian’s account
A family story,
in his words.
In a family-history note he sent in May 2020, Ian described the Wenzel family’s early years in Australia. His account says that his forebear George Ernest Wenzel came from Frankfurt as an assisted migrant aboard the AIDA in 1865, aged 29. Ian wrote that George worked as a currier, or leather dresser, and later started a tannery. He also described the work and family life associated with W. H. Wenzel and Sons.
In the long recording from the visit, Ian points to family photographs and recalls that his grandfather William Henry and three brothers began work in a Flinders Lane clothing warehouse after leaving school. He also remembers the brothers riding in a Warrnambool-to-Melbourne bicycle race, and tells how the family moved from leather dressing and a tannery in North Melbourne into heel-and-sole making. These are Ian’s recollections; the people, dates and businesses still need to be matched to original records.
This is recorded here as Ian’s family account, not as an independently verified conclusion. The passenger, marriage, business and family records still need to be checked against original sources.
03 / The garden
A home among
the pot plants.
Plants in pots were part of the home Ian showed me. The long portrait recording begins on the drive and later shows him among the plants. I have not identified individual species from that footage, so these three drawings are botanical examples for the page rather than claims about Ian’s own collection.
Spider plant
Chlorophytum comosum
Long, arching leaves make a generous shape in a hanging or raised pot.
Kew: accepted name ↗Jade plant
Crassula ovata
A small, sculptural succulent often grown as a container plant.
Kew: accepted name ↗Plant illustrations are original, simplified drawings. These species are examples only, not plants identified from Ian’s garden.
04 / Photographs
What the pictures
let us see.
The Google Photos album yielded seven distinct still scenes after repeated captures were grouped. Four additional family photographs supplied by Martin are included here. Names and dates remain open wherever the evidence does not identify them.

05 / Raw recordings
Fragments from
20 December 2020.
These 18 recordings were made by Martin during a visit to Ian’s home in Warragul, Victoria, on 20 December 2020. They come from the Google Photos album “Ian Wenzel”; the times below follow that album. Each item is presented in its original sequence without trimming.
The site copies were converted to MP4 for browser playback and keep the full duration and sound. Camera location and device metadata have been removed. The camera originals and machine-generated transcripts are kept in the private archive; transcript text is not published here.
The private transcripts were generated automatically and may contain errors; they have not been independently checked against the audio. The public captions describe visible scenes and do not identify people in older photographs without evidence.
06 / Scope
A family archive
in this account.
This page presents the photographs, recordings and family history included here. People, dates and relationships are named only where the material supports them; others remain unidentified.
