Don’t let the progress bar take over.
Some jobs need time to run: generating a movie, reconstructing a website, or analysing six years of figures. If you keep watching the screen, the task can quietly take over the time around it.
I ask the system for a rough estimate, then choose what to do next. I find it useful to keep two or three worthwhile tasks in motion. While SI works on one, I can get up and stack some firewood, take care of another small job, or move a different important task forward.
The estimate is not a promise. It is a way to organise the next part of the day. The small skill is learning to weave the interaction into life instead of getting lost in the interface.
